    NARCIS: linking CRISs and OARs in the Netherlands. A matter of standards and identifiers

    In the Netherlands the metadata of the national Current Research Information System (CRIS), the Dutch Research Database, and the metadata of the repositories are brought together in the scientific portal NARCIS. To gather the information from the different systems the OAI-PMH protocol is used. The main goal of NARCIS is to be the central place for searching all these data (one-stop-shopping), and to create the national showcase of researchers in the Netherlands.

    Users in the spotlight: study on the use of the Dutch scientific portal NARCIS, 2009

    The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) conducted three user studies in 2009. The first two studies were online surveys concerning the NARCIS portal. NARCIS (www.narcis.nl) is a gateway to (Open Access) publications published by all the Dutch universities, the Academy, the National Research Council (NWO) and a number of research institutes, to datasets managed by the DANS institute, and to descriptions of research projects, institutes and researchers (CRIS information). The surveys produced information about NARCIS users and usage, and how users rate the content and functionalities of NARCIS. The results will be used to help redesign the NARCIS website. The third study was a general survey of the need for research information, based on semi-structured interviews with various user groups in the Netherlands (researchers, policy-makers and the media). The interviews reveal that these groups make scarcely any use of NARCIS, if at all, but that they would already benefit from doing so. In addition, they have a number of wishes that NARCIS may be able to fulfil at a later stage.

    Visualization of NARCIS: a network of experts and knowledge organization in the Netherlands

    NARCIS is a well-known CERIF-based initiative of a model national CRIS where the outputs of the Dutch institutional CRIS and repository networks are aggregated for both universities and research organisations. On top of its datamodel covering researchers, organisations and projects, NARCIS has recently adopted the 'enhanced publications' approach for collecting additional files providing context to a paper (such as research data or others). This presentation focuses on the visualisation tools and strategies currently being applied to the information held in NARCIS in order to deliver innovative knowledge and collaboration maps for the research activity carried out in the country.
