Abstract
This paper examines the role of standards, persistent identifiers, and interoperable infrastructures in enabling open science within Antarctic research, with a particular focus on the National Antarctic Scientific Center (NASC) of Ukraine. Antarctic science depends on long-term, multi-decadal datasets that are essential for understanding global climate processes, environmental change, and ecosystem dynamics. However, the sustainability and usability of these datasets are challenged by technological obsolescence, fragmentation, and operational constraints inherent to polar research.
The study analyses international practices in Antarctic data governance and highlights the importance of metadata standards, FAIR principles, and globally recognised identifiers such as DOIs, ORCID, and ROR. It demonstrates that open science is not merely a normative ideal but a structural necessity for ensuring data continuity, interoperability, and reproducibility across generations of researchers and national programmes. Drawing on comparative international models, the paper proposes a conceptual framework for implementing integrated data management systems at NASC, including the adoption of standardised metadata architectures, persistent identifiers, and alignment with global research infrastructures.
The results show that the systematic adoption of open standards enhances data discoverability, strengthens international collaboration, and secures long-term preservation of Antarctic datasets. The paper concludes that embedding open science principles into institutional practices is critical for increasing the global visibility and scientific impact of Ukrainian Antarctic research, while contributing to a shared, interoperable knowledge system supporting global environmental governance.
