Abstract
The role of Current Research Information Systems (CRIS) is being fundamentally reconsidered with the ambitions of the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information and the principles of Open Science. Research information can no longer be treated as a static reporting layer. Instead, it must become an integral, interoperable, and open component of the research lifecycle itself.
Together with the Dutch universities of applied sciences (UAS), SURF is developing MORIS (Modular Open Research Information System) as a collective, open infrastructure to support this transformation. MORIS is positioned not merely as a CRIS replacement, but as a redefinition of the CRIS role: from a retrospective “system of records” to a modular, open “system of engagement” and records combined.
This paper presents:
• The sectoral context and governance model for MORIS
• The Lifecycle Product Management (LCPM) process used by SURF
• Insights from the proof-of-concept phase
• The rationale for selecting Concept 2
• How MORIS embodies the POSI principles, open source development, and sustainable collective governance
At its core, MORIS is built on one key principle: “research information should flow naturally as a by-product of research, not as an administrative afterthought”.
