Authors: De Castro, Pablo
Abstract: The presentation explores the role of Research Information Management Systems -- and national and regional CRIS in particular -- in the adoption and implementation of various persistent identifiers (PIDs). Some challenges and opportunities posed by the current PID landscape are described and examples are provided for PID implementation initiatives by different national and regional CRIS (Finland, Norway, Portugal, Flanders) in the areas of author IDs, organisation IDs, grant IDs and PIDs for research instrument and facilities. The use of PIDs in CRIS registries like the euroCRIS Directory of Research Information Systems (DRIS) is also analysed, examining the pros and cons of the possible use of DOIs to identify CRIS records that may often be subject to changes.

Abstract: The presentation explores various ways in which Current Research Information Systems (CRIS) may be used to provide research support services. A first example for this is the way CRISs are used -- together with institutional repositories -- for Open Access/Open Science implementation purposes. The CERIF data model is presented as the basis for a wide range of interconnected contextual metadata elements that allow the comprehensive collection of research information to both showcase the research activity conducted at an institution and to support evidence-based decision-making within it. CRISs may also be of great value to collect information to be used for a reformed research assessment process in line with the aspirations of the CoARA movement. An overview of the CRIS landscape in Spain is provided together with a few reflections on the various software solutions available in the country and some specific features of such landscape.

Authors: De Castro, Pablo
Abstract: The presentation provides a context for the newly-launched Brazilian national CRIS BrCris, which joins a much wider "family" of national research information management systems worldwide. The CRIS landscape is examined -- particularly in Latin America -- on the basis of the information held in the euroCRIS Directory of Research Information Systems (DRIS). Specific emphasis is made on the prominence of open source CRIS solutions in the region, with VIVO (that BrCris is based on, same as the national CONECTO platform in Panama) and DSpace-CRIS as the main open source CRIS platforms in the region. The recently launched CRISCROS working group for national and regional CRIS is introduced as a forum for an international discussion and exchange of best practices in the domain.

Authors: De Castro, Pablo
Abstract: The presentation highlights the very relevant role that CRIS systems – and specifically national and regional CRIS – are expected to play in the adoption and implementation of persistent identifiers. Some example case studies are provided for PID implementation initiatives where institutional/national/regional CRIS are playing or have played such a key role. A two-stage process for PID adoption is suggested where a first layer of internal and already persistent IDs will eventually be complemented with a top layer of international, resolvable PIDs once the appropriate standards are mature enough. The multi-faceted issue of PID maturity is discussed alongside some examples for PIDs both consolidated and emerging. The not always clear position of CRIS within the PID stakeholder community is examined and the large differences across countries are underlined. Finland is suggested as a possible model case study for organisational workflows around PIDs in view of the fact that the CSC in Espoo that hosts the Research.fi national CRIS is also the home for the Finnish National PID Strategy and the NREN for the country, besides holding the coordination for the FAIRCORE4EOSC project.
