LYRASIS is presented as a community-driven initiative to establish collaboration networks around open source software solutions for research information management and scholarly communications. A number of current challenges are described -- siloed systems, vendor lock-in, long-term sustainability and disorganised collaboration among others -- and the various collaborative initiatives promoted by the organisation are laid out.
