    Data Intensive Science: Shades of Grey

    The vast majority of research output is grey; white (peer reviewed scholarly publications) forms a minor proportion. Historically, grey material was generated and used within an organisation. However, in recent years some research-relevant grey material is being made openly available. Among grey outputs, research datasets are the largest proportion by volume and increasingly these are being made openly available. It is necessary for users of grey material to have some indication of reliability (quality, context, availability) so that they can judge whether the grey material is appropriate to their requirements. Rich metadata provides a mechanism for such evaluation. CERIF (Common European Research Information Format) provides such a rich metadata environment. Furthermore, CERIF allows generation of discovery level metadata (such as DC (Dublin Core), DCAT (Data Catalog Vocabulary), CKAN (Comprehensive Knowledge Archive Network) for simple retrieval or browsing and provides navigation to more detailed and specific metadata about the grey object. CERIF provides a bridge over research datasets and open government data. CERIF thus forms the lowest common level of metadata across grey (and white) objects.

    Bergen Campus Biomedical Research Cooperation Analysis using a CERIF-CRIS

    In this study we have analysed research cooperation between a Norwegian university and its affiliated university hospital using contextual metadata based on the CERIF (Common European Research Information Format) model on co-authored publications. The purpose is to analyse the extent and nature of cooperation between the institutions. The study functions as an example of how advanced metadata may be used for monitoring the research activity at institutions, their research output and cooperation links. Such information is important for research management purposes and we will show how the results have been applied in such contexts.

    CERIF: Past, Present and Future: An Overview

    CERIF (Common European Research Information Format) provides a canonical reference data model at both data and metadata levels. As such it is a model for the development of new CRISs (Current Research Information Systems) and a template both for data exchange between CRISs and for mediating access to multiple heterogeneous distributed CRISs. CERIF originated in 1988 but was based on earlier work in several European countries. The CERIF91 standard had some defects which became apparent in use. In 1997 a working group of the EC was set up to produce CERIF2000. This is a formal datamodel and thus unambiguously implementable. The CERIF Task Group of euroCRIS is working actively on implementations, lessons learned and improvements.

Further the paper considers the evolution of the technology to match the changing requirements of users for research information and indicate future directions.

    Comparative Study of Metadata for Scientific Information: The Place of CERIF in CRISs and Scientific Repositories

    Metadata provides the human- and machine-accessible gateway to data, improves data to information, and provides the semantic context within which knowledge can be induced from information. Metadata is the means for using together scientific data from heterogeneous sources. A CRIS commonly holds data which, while useful in itself, commonly is also metadata describing more detailed data and information on projects, persons, organizations, products of R&D (patents, products, publications) equipment used for R&D and R&D funding. It is important, therefore, to classify the metadata formats used in various scientific repositories in order to understand their scope and interoperability, and their relationship to CERIF representing CRISs. Metadata formats are reviewed according to intention, abstraction level and technology criteria. The place of CERIF in CRISs in this wider sense (including scientific repositories) is considered and compared with other metadata models and formats. The superiority of CERIF (in formalism and flexibility) is demonstrated.

    CERIF - Information Retrieval of Research Information in a Distributed Heterogeneous Environment

    User's demands to have access to complete and actual information about research may require integration of data from different CRISs. CRISs are rarely homogenous systems and problems of CRISs integration must be addressed from a technological point of view. Implementation of CRIS providing access to heterogeneous data distributed among a number of CRISs is described. A few technologies – distributed databases, web services, semantic web are used for distributed CRIS to address different user requirements. Distributed databases serve to implement very efficient integration of homogenous systems, web services - to provide open access to research information, semantic web – to solve problems of integration semantically and structurally heterogeneous data sources and provide intelligent data retrieval interfaces. The problems of data completeness in distributed systems are addressed and CRIS-adequate solution for data completeness is suggested.

    From Open Data to Data-Intensive Science through CERIF

    OGD (Open Government Data) is provided from government departments for transparency and to stimulate a market in ICT services for industry and citizens. Research datasets from publicly funded research commonly are associated with the open scholarly publications movement. However, the former world commonly is derived from the latter with generalisation and summarisation. There is advantage in a user of OGD being able to ‘drill down’ to the underlying research datasets. OGD encourages cross-domain research because the summarized data from different domains is more easily relatable. Bridging across the two worlds requires rich metadata; CERIF (Common European Research Information Format) has proved itself to be ideally suited to this requirement. Utilising the research datasets is data-intensive science, a component of e-Research. Data-intensive science also requires access to an e-infrastructure. Virtualisation of this e-infrastructure optimizes this.

    State of the Art and Roadmap for Current Research Information Systems and Repositories: White Paper

    Various pressures bring CRIS and repositories together. In many countries evaluation of research is becoming important, to assure public funds are well-spent. Such requirements need to associate research output (including publications but also products, patents, dissemination at events) with persons, organizational units (university, faculty, department, cross-department centre, research group), projects (e.g. funded grants), facilities (e.g. large synchrotron radiation sources), equipment (particular experiment) for analysis. Repository systems usually do not collect this contextual information, being restricted to scholarly publication output with title, abstract, author and some other publication-related information, commonly based on DC (Dublin Core) metadata. On the other hand, some CRIS include within them the research outputs as objects (e.g. publications). Similarly, the context of a research output is important in evaluating its utility, quality and relevance to any repurposing. Context is usually recorded in a CRIS. CERIF provides an appropriate timestamped structure so that provenance information is also available.
