    Piloting the use of RAiD in research.fi

    Research.fi is a national service for collecting, integrating and disseminating information on research conducted in Finland. Research.fi takes over the content of a legacy repository on research projects from 'Projectnet'. Projectnet was a service that collected information about research projects focusing on natural resources from six Finnish research organizations. Research.fi will pilot the Research Activity identifier (RAiD) as part of an EU-funded project FAIRCORE4EOSC. RAiD provides persistent, unique and resolvable information for research projects. The aim of piloting RAiD is first of all to gain insights on how this type of identifier could work in the context of Research.fi. Some of the main challenges in adopting RAiD on a national level will be charted, and at the same time possible process improvements to make it more palatable to local stakeholders will be considered. Using legacy data that has originally been harvested to cater the needs of a different service in piloting RAiD does cause some challenges. To ensure optimal resolution of challenges faced, the Research.fi works in collaboration with the RAiD registration authority, ARDC, and the in-progress RAiD Registration Agency for Europe at SURF. The team doing the work described in the paper is confident that sharing the challenges they face as well as the solutions they find are of interest to the wider CRIS community.

    Challenges in managing semantic annotations in harvested research objects in a national CRIS context

    Harvested metadata on research objects can include links between the primary domain objects such as organizational identifiers associated with dataset, persons identified with ORCIDs linked to publications and publications connected through ISSNs to publishing channels. This kind of linkage is the bread-and-butter of the CRIS systems and usually comprehensively maintained. When it comes to the more subjective description of a domain object, such as keywords, themes, or subject headings, the issues related to data management and modeling become prominent with challenges such as flexibility of free text keywords as opposed to authoritative, but rigid classification systems. Many CRIS objects also already contain an extensive description of the content, just meant for human consumption, in the form of an abstract or similar summary text. With the help of automated data mining and annotation tools, these textual representations can be processed into structured data. This paper presents the processing pipelines implemented as part of the research.fi portal for automatic linking of different research inputs based on automatically extracted ontology concepts and discusses the implications of utilizing them as part of the research.fi platform. But more than simply discussing the annotation of research objects and the creation of word clusters for representation of the semantic content of research objects, we also discuss challenges related to maintaining the automatically produced metadata, as the utilized ontologies evolve, annotation algorithms develop, connections between research objects and mined word clusters change over time.

    FAIRCORE4EOSC and the Metadata Schema and Crosswalk Registry

    The EU-funded FAIRCORE4EOSC project (FC4E), currently at month 17 of 36, aims to develop nine new EOSC-Core components to improve the discoverability and interoperability of an increased amount of research outputs. These Core components -- some of which are to be addressed in further presentations within the project session -- are summarised together with a series of disciplinary case studies developed in collaboration with specific project partners. The emphasis is on core component no 3, the EOSC MSCR or Metadata Schema and Crosswalk Registry, whose structure and data governance are described in some detail. The hands-on FC4E workshop to be held at the CRIS2024 Conference in Vienna in May 2024 is announced.

    Deployment of the Finnish Interoperability Platform in the Design of the Research Information Hub

    In Finland, a suite of integrated tools has been created for interoperable digital public service development – an Interoperability platform. The service is provided by the Finnish Population Register Centre and it serves the entire public administration in Finland. The main components are the concept definition tool, the code list tool and the modelling tool.

    Piloting the use of PIDGRAPH data in research.fi

    Research.fi is a national service for collecting, integrating and disseminating information on research conducted in Finland. This includes information on publications and related research outputs (including in the arts), datasets, funding decisions and research infrastructures. It is clear, however, that the coverage of information on the connection between these objects, such as publication – dataset references, has serious shortcomings. The PIDGraph is a collection of metadata about research objects, authors, publishers, institutions, and other research related items, all identified by persistent identifiers, and a series of systems to expose that metadata and make it available for analysis and integration with other systems. In order to harvest information on the connections between publications and datasets available in Research.fi, we have been looking into the PIDGraph, first to find out the coverage of PIDGraph in regard to the content of Research.fi and secondly to see if it is possible to enrich research.fi with the information gained from PIDGraph. We aim at being able to link Research.fi publications to datasets and vice versa, publications to publications, and datasets to datasets. The testing of the PIDGraph is still a work in progress, but the authors consider that sharing the exercise of ingesting research object relationship data is of high relevance to the CRIS community. We also aim to present the applicability of lessons learned for other potential adopters of the PIDGraph.

    CRIS systems integration as a case study for the Metadata Schema and Crosswalk Registry

    Mappings are essential to interoperability for both human and systems when there is a need to exchange information without a common formats. In this paper we report on the results of work related to mappings between models from the national CRIS systems and the new refactored and modernized CERIF2 model. Metadata Schema and Crosswalk Registry (MSCR) is a a new tool under development as part of the FAIRCORE4EOSC project that is designed to support the maintenance of schemas and crosswalks between them. The MSCR also facilitates the operationalization of crosswalks i.e. the transformation of metadata records. We will present the current status of the CERIF2, the results of mapping from the Finnish national CRIS research.fi and CERIF2, and demonstrate the role of the MSCR in process of implementing operability.

    FAIRCORE4EOSC: Developing EOSC Core components to enable a FAIR EOSC ecosystem

    FAIRCORE4EOSC is a 36-month EU-funded project aimed to enhance FAIRness in the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) ecosystem for research data and associated services. Led by the CSC in Finland, the goal of FAIRCORE4EOSC is to contribute to the development of the EOSC Core in areas like persistent identifiers, metadata and ontologies, interoperability and research software. The project's nine Core Components are described, among them the EOSC PID Graph, the EOSC PID Meta Resolver and the EOSC Research Activity Identifier (RAiD) Service. A number of domain-specific case studies in the SSH, Mathematics or Climate Change are also envisioned to co-develop and test these core components. The presentation focuses on one of these case studies, the European Integration of National level services, and explores the role that national CRIS systems are expected to play in its implementation.
