    DataCite and FAIR Workflows

    The world of research and academic publishing is complex and challenging. There is a need for collective efforts to enhance the discoverability and usage of research out-puts. DataCite is the project organization that leads the “Implementing FAIR Workflows” project, funded by the Templeton World Charity Foundation. Prompted to address the complexities of scholarly information, DataCite, along with the project partners, aims to develop an exemplar FAIR and Open Research workflow based on the reality of the research lifecycle. The aim is to implement such a workflow through the integration of existing and well-accepted global open infrastructure, particularly the different identifier systems, thus enabling research evaluation and accelerated output reuse. ChronosHub is one of the project partners and acts as an intermediary to facilitate the information flow between the different stakeholders in the research ecosystem. This session will invite a discussion of how all of us in the research ecosystem can contribute with collaborative actions to build bridges and remove enormous amounts of administrative work with data collection, structuring, and quality assurance.

    Luxembourg and the National Infrastructure

    In 2020, the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), the National Library of Luxembourg (BnL), and ChronosHub joined forces and embarked on a collaborative journey to help address and resolve challenges emerging from OA developments in the research ecosystem. In 2017, FNR introduced its first Open Access Policy and created an Open Access Fund to contribute to APC costs for publications resulting from FNR funded research. The administrative burden for FNR and institutions in general was prominent, causing a lot of painful processes that impacted the entire workflow. Prompted to find a solution to enhance and improve the infrastructure and address these challenges, FNR and BnL entered a pilot with ChronosHub, a platform that offers a 360-degree approach to OA Management. Now, FNR, BnL, and ChronosHub have moved on to sign a long-term operational agreement to streamline OA management on a national level which ties in all research institutions in the country. Luxembourg now has a systematic approach to drive Open Access, FAIR data, and Open Science and the partnership between ChronosHub and Luxembourg has helped optimize the interplay and the communication between FNR, publishers, institutions, and authors.

    Research performance assessment in interdisciplinary research: two case studies for Germany and the UK

    The presentation examines the need to have standardized classifications for an adequate research reporting and assessment activity. A comparison is provided between institutional research reporting from current research information systems for assessment processes at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany and for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) in the UK. Finally, the Output Profiles reporting feature by the Converis CRIS is introduced, showing its high-degree of matching for the REF requirements.

    Advances in Sharing and Managing Knowledge about European Research Infrastructures

    Research excellence requires excellent research infrastructures. Given the important role of research infrastructures for scientific discoveries and innovation, the European scientific community and policy makers have expressed their needs for a comprehensive database of research infrastructures in Europe. The European Commission funded MERIL initiative (Mapping of the European Research Infrastructure Landscape), which is coordinated by the European Science Foundation (ESF), aims to achieve an inventory of research infrastructures of European relevance and to make the information publicly available through an interactive online portal, which will be launched during the Autumn 2012. In this paper, we describe the initiative and discuss the driving forces, challenges and solutions for establishing a system which sustainably provides its stakeholders with the desired key information on Research Infrastructure of European relevance.

    Lessons Learned in the UK from Navigating the FAIR Open Science World: A Collaborative Approach Leveraging the CRIS for Transforming Scholarly Communications

    As advocates of Open Science, we recognize the need for a comprehensive solution to manage the diverse spectrum of research outputs. This solution must seamlessly weave through researchers' workflows, lifting the burden from library and research administrators drowning in a sea of Excel spreadsheets and email correspondence. It must also confront the formidable challenge of managing Open Access expenditure alongside subscriptions. Initially turning to Current Research Information Systems (CRIS) as a potential savior, we found them not sufficiently adopted by our researchers. The outdated user experience and extensive manual work required from faculty and administrators posed challenges. Moreover, the CRIS did not address the explicit Open Access and Open Science challenges, including managing Article Processing Charges (APCs), OA agreements, deposits of research datasets, or compliance with funding policies like Plan S. To tackle these evolving challenges, we adopted a collaborative strategy, uniting forces within the university and forging alliances with international partners to construct a sustainable infrastructure. This collaborative effort builds bridges across diverse stakeholders, integrating systems and workflows while embracing the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Identifiable and Reusable) principles as the bedrock for automation. Our case study highlights connecting our CRIS (Pure) with ChronosHub as a layer on top of our internal and external systems at Lancaster University.

    Interoperability: the View from Converis

    The presentation provides a follow-up to the discussion on interoperability across the research lifecycle David Baker (CASRAI), Josh Brown (ORCID) and Ed Simons (euroCRIS) had at the recently held Converis Global User Group event in London. The presentation examines the challenges for implementing this seamless cross-institutional interoperability and provides two case studies based on the Converis-based SweCRIS in Sweden and the research information management system at the Region of Bolzano in Italy.
