    Several contributions on the implementation of the OpenAIRE Guidelines for CRIS Managers have been presented at previous CRIS conferences, both in St Andrews in 2016 and in Rome in 2014. However, by the start of 2018, the number of CRIS systems included on the list of OpenAIRE data providers was still zero. One key reason for such a slow progress in the implementation of this key step in the area of system interoperability has been the development of an updated version of the CERIF-XML-based OpenAIRE Guidelines for CRIS Managers that has taken place in the meantime in order to enable a smoother and more effective information exchange process.

    The important role of CRIS’s for registration and archiving of research data

    Optimal research data management and archiving is a key condition for progress in modern science and of vital importance from both the point of view of research as such as well as research policy and management. More specifically it is a conditio sine qua non for the realisation of Open Science and at the same time it is indispensable for the monitoring and assessment of the quality and integrity of research. Various aspects play a role here: optimal infrastructures and tools for the actual handling of data during the research lifecycle, appropriate metadata to describe the datasets, and - last but not least - an adequate organisational framework to curate and archive the datasets professionally and provide optimal support and services to the researchers.

    In 2016, Radboud University (Nijmegen, The Netherlands) started a project to extend its CRIS (METIS) with a functionality that allows researchers to register (metadata) and archive (uploading files) their research data (through the CRIS) while at the same time making the data available for reuse in a FAIR way (via national Dutch data archive DANS).

    EuroCRIS and CERIF. The Importance of an International Standard Metadata Model for Research Information

    The presentation introduces euroCRIS as an international organisation for promoting the implementation of efficient and interoperable research information management infrastructure with a particularly active presence in Eastern European countries. The Common European Research Information Format (CERIF) is described as a standard that will allow a comprehensive modeling of the research activity carried out at institutional or national level, with key features such as Link Entities or the Semantic Layer. The requirement for system interoperability is stressed within a complex Research Information Ecosystem where multiple systems need to exchange data. The key role CERIF plays in this framework is described with an example application to the modeling of research data via the 3-layer approach.

    The (possible) role of Research Information Systems (CRIS) for an institution and its researchers. With special attention to research data management and archiving

    The presentation describes the possible use of CRIS systems as one-stop-shops for recording all research-related activities and makes emphasis on the role of research data management as a potential game changer in the perception that researchers may have of such systems as research tool vs platforms for research administration alone. A case study is presented for the METIS institutional CRIS at Radboud University in Nijmegen, where different areas of research data management -- such as the production of data management plans or the processes for data deposit, persistent and unique identification and exposure -- have been fully integrated in the CRIS in order to make METIS a valuable resource for researchers beyond its reporting features.

    Open Science: the crucial importance of metadata

    “We conclude that a European Integrated Research Information Infrastructure is technically feasible thanks to recent technological developments and especially the maturity of the European CERIF standard, which allows seamless interlinking of datasets and/or research information systems, in different formats and including non-CERIF systems”. This was the conclusion of the report "Measuring scientific performance for improved policy making" produced by a working group of the European Parliament in April 2014. These few slides to introduce the Panel Discussion on Open Science and FAIR Data argue that given the wealth of metadata contained in CRIS system and the gradual evolution of these platforms from tools for research administration to primary resources of research information, it makes sense for the Open Science and FAIR Data communities on one side and the RIM community on the other to collaborate to progress together towards a common objective.

    The 3 Pillars of Standardisation: Driving Interoperability in Research Information

    The presentation deals with the conditions to realise optimal research information infrastructures, based upon interoperability between information systems. In order to realise this interoperability the implementaiton of international standards for vocabularies, identifiers and exchange format is a condition sine qua non. Aspects hampering (the realisation of) interoperability are dealt with as well as (positive) developments which may lead to possible solutions in the near future. At the end two alternative architectural models for the realisation of a European research information infrastructure are presented.
