OpenAIRE compatibility for CRIS systems: recent progress

Several contributions on the implementation of the OpenAIRE Guidelines for CRIS Managers have been presented at previous CRIS conferences, both in St Andrews in 2016 and in Rome in 2014. However, by the start of 2018, the number of CRIS systems included on the list of OpenAIRE data providers was still zero. One key reason for such a slow progress in the implementation of this key step in the area of system interoperability has been the development of an updated version of the CERIF-XML-based OpenAIRE Guidelines for CRIS Managers that has taken place in the meantime in order to enable a smoother and more effective information exchange process.

A comparison of research output counting methods using a national CRIS – effects at the institutional level

Recent decades have seen a trend towards scientific publications with many authors. There is not an agreed way of counting coauthored publications. This research in progress contribution compares the behaviour of four representative methods of counting research outputs. We present differences between those methods of counting evaluated at the level of whole universities, their faculties, or non-university research institutes. Our study uses publication metadata from a national CRIS.

A technical description is provided of the CERIF-CRIS Reference Implementation (CC-REFIM) project internally developed by euroCRIS. This project aims to provide a reference system able to reliably check and confirm CERIF compatibility of (a) CERIFCRIS software platforms (e.g. PURE, CONVERIS, Symplectic Elements, Research in View, etc.) and (b) individual operational CERIF-CRIS systems currently in production, for example institutional,national or international CRIS (e.g. OpenAIREplus, EuroRIs-Net+); for example, candidates for checking with Scenario (b) are all systems that are registered on the euroCRIS Directory of Research Information Systems (DRIS)..

The CERIF Refactoring Pilot project: an update

The progress of the ongoing euroCRIS CERIF Refactoring Pilot project is summarised as a follow-up from the project presentation delivered last May at the CRIS2022 Conference in Dubrovnik. The objectives of the refactoring of the CERIF data model are to keep the strong features of CERIF while at the same time removing the perceived complexity of its data model. This project is an attempt to modernise CERIF ideally involving the community in its further development and fine-tuning. The modularity introduced in the CERIF data model involves having a set of core CERIF entities -- already available for comments on a github repository -- plus a number of modules developed in a decentralised way to ensure the scalability of any future CERIF development. A number of newly introduced CERIF entities in the core model such as agent, activity and resource are finally outlined.

Research Projects in CERIF

Research project is one of the main entities of the CERIF model, together with person (researcher) and organisational unit. The presentation outlines the kinds of research projects projects there are and the way projects are coded in CERIF, i.e. the specific metadata set used to describe them. The links to the two additional main entities besides other secondary entities like research results and research facilities are explained with examples. Differences are finally examined in the way research projects are addressed from institutional CRIS, funder CRIS and CRIS systems supporting research infrastructures.

Practical CRIS Interoperability

Institutional Current Research Information Systems typically interoperate and interact with a rich variety of other information systems and services. We aim at providing a basic list and discussing the motivations, the technical aspects of the information interchange that is taking place, and potential benefits of applying CERIF. Our findings are illustrated on the example of a home-built university CRIS with almost two decades of history.
