The presentation describes the work in research unit evaluation carried out by the Haut conseil de l'évaluation de la recherche at de l'enseignement supérieur (HCERES) in France. This evaluation process, which is applied to 60-70 universities and schools and 3 research organisms annually, is explained, together with its criteria and its challenges.
