Abstract
CRIS2026 keynote by the euroCRIS Board member and lead for the AI4RIS WG providing an overview of the current state of AI, its opportunities and challenges. Specifically on AI in CRIS, the discussion focuses on the use of AI on the knowledge infrastructure through which institutions understand, represent, evaluate, and expose their research. Potential privacy issues and the imbalance of non-reciprocal reuse of research information by tech companies are examined, together with a number of structural ethical and epistemic risks associated with the use of AI. A three-pillar strategy for the responsible use of AI is presented in the areas of governance, principles and tools. A call is made for the operationalisation of FAIR for the era of AI: it's not enough for the data to be reusable; its license must be clear, machine-readable, and suitable for training AI models.
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is proposed and demoed as a framework to connect AI to trustworthy systems, under institutional control. The take-home message is that CRIS system and their data should be open to tech companies and their chatbots not because companies need the data, but because society needs the science. It's the CRIS managers' responsibility to ensure that answers provided by AI systems point back to trusted research, with context, attribution and provenance.
