Abstract: 
The presentation describes the features and advantages of federated scenarios for research information management and makes emphasis on the need for standards in order to realise this interoperability-based vision. Two case studies for internal vs external federations are presented for the University of Sunderland and the CERIF-based Aristoteles federated platform implemented at the Province of Bozen/Bolzano.
