Abstract:
The presentation explores the role of Research Information Management Systems -- and national and regional CRIS in particular -- in the adoption and implementation of various persistent identifiers (PIDs). Some challenges and opportunities posed by the current PID landscape are described and examples are provided for PID implementation initiatives by different national and regional CRIS (Finland, Norway, Portugal, Flanders) in the areas of author IDs, organisation IDs, grant IDs and PIDs for research instrument and facilities. The use of PIDs in CRIS registries like the euroCRIS Directory of Research Information Systems (DRIS) is also analysed, examining the pros and cons of the possible use of DOIs to identify CRIS records that may often be subject to changes.
