    Lessons Learned and the Road Ahead: Building on the Success of RIS Synergy

    The RIS Synergy project was launched in March 2020 under the leadership of TU Wien and is a part of the Research Data Cluster, which brings together digitisation projects to improve research support along the scientific project cycle. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) as part of the "Digital and Social Transformation in Higher Education" call for proposals. Initially starting with 13 partners (10 universities and 3 research funding institutions), the project consortium now includes 18 participating institutions (14 universities, 4 research funding institutions). The goals of RIS Synergy encompass optimising administrative support for research projects, enhancing data quality and transparency for research institutions, and improving the quality of research data. It addresses key aspects of digital transformation within a cross-institutional consortium. The project is divided into two subprojects: Subproject One, “Interfaces and Standards”, focuses on developing standardised access and exchange options for the systems of funding organisations, research institutions, and public administrative bodies. Subproject Two, “Concept Study for a Research Portal”, then analyses the framework conditions and requirements for creating an Austrian national research portal. Thus, RIS Synergy aims to enhance visibility for science by standardising and digitising services, as well as by establishing expert networks. This paper offers insights into the project’s overall approach, key findings from the last four years as well as lessons learned, and provides an outlook on future challenges related to the project's conclusion and its transition to regular operations.

    Bridging the Gap: Research Data in Research Information Systems

    In recent years, the number of implementations of research data as a data type in current research information systems (CRIS) has increased significantly. Firstly, this paper examines the ongoing discourse surrounding the relationship between research data and CRIS in the relevant scientific literature. Secondly, it analyses possible use cases for integrating the “research data” data type into an institutional CRIS, focusing on the research information system of the University of Vienna u:cris. In addition to the CRIS, which only documents metadata, the University of Vienna has two repositories: an institutional repository, PHAIDRA, and a discipline-specific repository, AUSSDA, catering to the social sciences. Complementing these repositories, the university supports researchers in managing their research data with a data steward team consisting of six people. In 2021, the University of Vienna adopted a Research Data Management (RDM) Policy that describes the responsibilities of the University of Vienna and the researchers in terms of managing research data adequately. Several small-scale studies have sought to assess and monitor the RDM practices of the university's researchers, but so far no substantial data – quantitative or qualitative – has been collected for the entire institution, nor for individual organisational units. With this in mind, this paper examines the possibility of leveraging the research information system u:cris to support and further develop the university’s research data management services. The potential applications for implementing a dataset module in u:cris are illustrated by case studies from other CRIS implementations at both institutional and national levels.

    Research Information on an International Level: Understanding the diverse landscape of national and regional CRIS

    CRIS2024 conference round table on the topic of national/regional research portals and research information systems. Two years after the CRIS2022 workshop "National Research Portal 101: The dos and don'ts of building a sustainable portal" at http://hdl.handle.net/11366/1976 that initiated the CRISCROS Working Group on National and Regional Research Portals, the working group would like to present the findings of almost two years of collaboration in a specific session dedicated to this topic. The activity was conducted as a one-hour session with the participation of working group participants as well as other interested conference visitors. The round table was coordinated - both structurally and in terms of content - by the RIS Synergy project.

    National Research Portal 101: The dos and don'ts of building a sustainable portal

    This is a proposal for a CRIS2022 conference workshop to discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of a national research information management system. The activity is conceived as a half-day workshop with the participation of different – mostly European – initiatives and projects to implement national and regional CRIS portals. Since this is planned as an on-site event and an opportunity for a face-to-face discussion in Dubrovnik, where the CRIS2022 conference will be held in May 2022, in-person participation is essential in order to have a lively exchange on the various topics outlined in the attached extended abstract.
