    Data Intensive Science: Shades of Grey

    The vast majority of research output is grey; white (peer reviewed scholarly publications) forms a minor proportion. Historically, grey material was generated and used within an organisation. However, in recent years some research-relevant grey material is being made openly available. Among grey outputs, research datasets are the largest proportion by volume and increasingly these are being made openly available. It is necessary for users of grey material to have some indication of reliability (quality, context, availability) so that they can judge whether the grey material is appropriate to their requirements. Rich metadata provides a mechanism for such evaluation. CERIF (Common European Research Information Format) provides such a rich metadata environment. Furthermore, CERIF allows generation of discovery level metadata (such as DC (Dublin Core), DCAT (Data Catalog Vocabulary), CKAN (Comprehensive Knowledge Archive Network) for simple retrieval or browsing and provides navigation to more detailed and specific metadata about the grey object. CERIF provides a bridge over research datasets and open government data. CERIF thus forms the lowest common level of metadata across grey (and white) objects.

    The New Technologies: Can CRISs Benefit?

    The end-user demands low effort threshold access to systems providing e-information, e-business and e-entertainment. Innovators and entrepreneurs require also equally low-energy access to heterogeneous information homogenized to a form and language familiar to them. On top of that, decision-makers – whether in a control room or government strategic planning - demand equally easy access to information that is statistically or inductively enhanced to knowledge, and access to modeling or simulation systems to allow ‘what if?’ requests. Researchers and technical workers have an additional requirement for rapid integration of information with statistical, induction, modelling and simulation systems to generate and verify hypotheses so generating data and information – to be used by others - which in turn advances knowledge. Access is required - and can now be provided - anytime, anyhow, anywhere through ambient computing technology. A new paradigm, GRIDs, provides the architectural framework. Where are the CRISs?

    CRIS in 2020

    A vision for the requirements of a CRIS in 2020 is presented. It forms part of an e-infrastructure ICT environment for the whole domain of research. The history of CRIS is analysed to pick out key developments and the barriers to achieving the vision are addressed. A plan is proposed to meet the vision, overcoming the barriers and utilising expected developments in ICT. The key is CERIF used as metadata. The novelty is the concept of a CRISBOT.

    CERIF: Past, Present and Future: An Overview

    CERIF (Common European Research Information Format) provides a canonical reference data model at both data and metadata levels. As such it is a model for the development of new CRISs (Current Research Information Systems) and a template both for data exchange between CRISs and for mediating access to multiple heterogeneous distributed CRISs. CERIF originated in 1988 but was based on earlier work in several European countries. The CERIF91 standard had some defects which became apparent in use. In 1997 a working group of the EC was set up to produce CERIF2000. This is a formal datamodel and thus unambiguously implementable. The CERIF Task Group of euroCRIS is working actively on implementations, lessons learned and improvements.

    The euroCRIS View of the Rome OA Workshop

    The presentation addresses the metadata requirements that research information management systems must meet and how repositories and current research information systems could interoperate by sharing the CERIF standard. CERIF allows rich semantic relationships to be established among its different entities, providing a comprehensive metadata description of the whole research activity at institutional level.
