Abstract: 
The results of a survey are presented that the Portuguese National Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) has carried out in order to identify the state of the art of national CRIS system implementation across different countries as a preliminary step in the project towards the development of a Portuguese one. Present national research information management systems have been analised from various points of view in Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Slovakia, The Netherlands and Brazil in order to collect a comprehensive picture of their features and of the requirements for an effective design and operation of such a system.
