    ACUMEN Portfolio: Resources for Evaluation of Individual Researchers

    Academic Careers Understood through Measurement and Norms (ACUMEN) is an FP7 collaborative research project that addresses discrepancies between the criteria used in performance assessment of individual researchers and the broader social and economic function of scientific and scholarly research. Problems associated with these discrepancies include: lack of resources for qualitative evaluation due to increased scale of research; available quantitative measures are often not applicable at the individual level; lack of recognition for new types of work that researchers need to perform. As a result of these limitations, the broader social functions of the scientific system are often not included in its quality control mechanisms. This presentation introduces ACUMEN's proposed researcher portfolio concept along with guidelines for good evaluation practices, both of which incorporate: 1) results of a comparative study of peer review systems in Europe; 2) taxonomy of quantitative performance indicators appropriate for evaluation of individuals; and 3) evaluation guidelines associated with gender dimensions, diversity of evaluation contexts among European countries, and disciplinary differences.

    GraspOS: next Generation Research Assessment to Promote Open Science

    GraspOS (next Generation Research Assessment to Promote Open Science) is a new project funded under the EOSC umbrella to kick-off on Jan 1st, 2023. The project builds on previous work and aims to promote Responsible Research Assessment by enabling a rewards and recognition system based on a new generation of (qualitative or quantitative) metrics and indicators. GraspOS will develop, assess and put into operation an open and trusted federated infrastructure for next generation research metrics and indicators. Developing an Open Science Assessment Framework (OSAF) is shown as a key project objective. The 18-partner GraspOS project consortium shows again some overlap with the consortia for the other two EOSC projects presented previously, FAIRCORE4EOSC and FAIR-IMPACT.

    The (mis)alignment of Open Science and research evaluation: addressing complexity with existing resources and context-sensitive evaluation

    The presentation addresses the misalignment between the principles of Open Science and the current mechanisms for research evaluation, which do not accurately capture the aspects that should reward Open Science practitioners. An overview is first provided of the present Open Science policy context both at an European and a national level in the Netherlands. The concept of Openness Profile is introduced, devised by a Knowledge Exchange working group as a means to capture good Open Science practice at a bottom level. Finally, an 'Evaluative Inquiry' approach is proposed as an alternative research evaluation framework that captures Open Science practice by changing the assessment methodology.
